Anise
The plant has a grooved stem and alternately arranged leaves. The lower leaves are round with a toothed edge and petioles which can be between 4 and 10 cm (1.6–3.9 in) in length.
Anise seed, or Pimpinella anisum, is a powerhouse of a spice.

Anise's use in cooking dates to the ancient Egyptians, though it was the Romans who ate anise seed cakes after meals to ease digestion. Anise is also a traditional digestive aid in India, where people also know it as a breath freshener.
In foods, anise is used as a flavouring agent. It has a sweet, aromatic taste that resembles the taste of black liquorice. Anise is also used in dairy products, gelatine, meats, candies, and breath fresheners. Anise seed is the flavouring for some alcoholic beverages.
